Entrepreneurs’ interest in battery storage is growing – and now it is clear why

From Surplus Energy to a Market Opportunity

The energy market is undergoing one of the biggest transformations in recent decades. For businesses, energy is no longer just a cost to be optimised; it is increasingly becoming a resource that can be actively managed and even used to generate additional revenue. In this environment, battery energy storage systems are rapidly moving beyond technological innovation to become a standard part of the energy infrastructure of industrial and commercial operations.

Interest among Croatian businesses in battery storage systems is growing significantly, driven by several factors: increasingly pronounced fluctuations in electricity prices, a substantial decline in technology costs, and advances in digital tools that enable precise management of energy production, consumption and storage. At the heart of this trend is a new business logic: energy is no longer simply consumed when it is available, but stored when it is cheap and used or sold when it is most valuable.

“Across European electricity markets, intraday price differences are becoming increasingly pronounced. Between 10 am and 5 pm, when solar power plants generate the most electricity, prices often fall to very low or even negative levels. During the evening peak (around 6–9 pm), prices frequently rise sharply as solar generation declines. This pattern occurs because solar generation is not flexible and cannot easily be reduced, while electricity demand remains high in the evening, increasing price volatility and highlighting the importance of flexible systems such as batteries and balancing reserves,” explains Marijeta Majer, Director of Energy Projects at ENNA Next, which contracted several battery storage projects in 2025.
